Ricky Gervais Comes "Home"

It's what fans of "The Office" have been waiting 10 years for: Michael Scott meets David Brent:

David Brent is, of course, the character that Ricky Gervais played on the original UK version of "The Office", of which Gervais is the creator. He's also one of the excutive producers on the US version of the show (which has now been adapted for more than a dozen countries around the world).

Steve Carrell made headlines in 2010 when he announced he was leaving "The Office" to pursue his movie career. Gervais made headlines THIS year after his legendary hosting of the 2011 Golden Globe awards.

The 2011 Golden Globes

So, last night, the 2011 Golden Globes were held in Beverly Hills, California and there weren't a whole LOT of surprises. The big winners included "Glee" which took home 3 awards (including the award for "Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy) and "The Social Network" which received 4 awards (including "Best Picture, Drama").

It seemed, however, that the REAL talk of the Golden Globes was the host/MC...Ricky Gervais.

Over the course of the evening he managed to trash Angelina Jolie, Charlie Sheen, John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis, Robert Downey Jr., Hugh Hefner and God.

Some have said he was "over the top" and "completely insulting". Others have said he was "bloody brilliant" and "genius". Personally, I'm a member of the latter...I think the man is an amazing talent who was just saying what everyone was thinking. But then again, it's hard to be impartial when you're a fan, like I am.

All of this being said, it's rumored that Gervais will NOT be coming back for a THIRD run as the host of the Golden Globes in 2012 as (apparently) the final straw was when he made a joke about Phillip Berk, the current head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (something to do with helping him off the toilet and popping his teeth back in).

According to a story over at Popeater.com, a source with the HFPA has said that Gervais "definitely will not be invited back next year" and that his schtik this year could have dire consequences including "any movie he makes can forget about being nominated".

Oh well...at least he made good on his promise.

2010 Golden Globes - And The Winner Is...

The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards aired live from rainy Beverly Hills Sunday night with many winners announced in both the TV and Movie categories. The show was hosted by the creator of “The Office” in the U.K., funnyman Ricky Gervais.

“Avatar” continued its impressive run winning awards for Best Dramatic Picture and Best Director James Cameron. To everyone’s surprise “The Hangover” beat out “500 Days of Summer”, “It’s Complicated”, “Julie & Julia” and “Nine” for the award of Best Picture, Musical or Comedy. Best Actor and Actress in a Musical or Comedy went to Robert Downey Jr. for “Sherlock Holmes” and Meryl Streep for “Julie & Julia”. Sandra Bullock took home the Best Actress in a Drama globe for her role in “The Blind Side” and Jeff Bridges won the Actor category for “Crazy Heart”.

Nobody was surprised when Mo’Nique’s name was called as the winner of Best Supporting Actress for “Precious”. Christoph Waltz won Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Nazi Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds”. The animated movie “Up” took home globes for Best Animated Film and the Best Score.

In the TV categories, “Mad Men” took home the Golden Globe for the third year in a row for Best Television Drama. The comedy or musical category was taken by the new hit “Glee”. Toni Collette and Alec Baldwin won the awards for best actor and actress in a comedy or musical television series; Collette for “United States of Tara” and Baldwin for “30 Rock”.

The drama category was won by Michael C. Hall for “Dexter” and Julianna Margulies for “The Good Wife”. Michael C. Hall who just announced that he’s battling cancer showed up for the awards and left everyone from the cast of “Dexter” in tears with his acceptance speech.
